Vampire Weekend - Diane Young / Step

A few years ago, I named Vampire Weekend's Contra the best album of 2010.  That's a decision I'll still stand by and defend to this day.  Well, give and take a few albums depending on my mood.  That was a competitive year. Anyways, Vampire Weekend have recently released two new singles from their upcoming album, Modern Vampires Of The City.  It's a double A-Side situation.

My Favorite Albums Of 2010: Part Two

Ima Robot - Another Man's Treasure
After Alex Ebert's massively successful year with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, the singer decided to return to his former dance-punk band, Ima Robot.  The band's third album, Another Man's Treasure, strays from their distinct and distorted high energy sound.  Instead, the album sounds like the halfway point between Ima Robot and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes.  There are long stretches of instrumentals within the album, giving the band a more fleshed out sound.  At times, you may think you're listening to a Bowie album.  Another Man's Treasure somehow sounds fresh and classic at the same time.

Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz
During the climax of "I Want To Be Well", Sufjan Stevens shouts "I'm not ****ing around".  He wasn't joking.  The Age Of Adz is a jumble of genres and noises that concludes with a massive 25 minute track.  It is in no way a casual album.  Through the mix of symphonic instrumentations and electronic bleeps, Sufjan's conceptual album leaves a lasting impression.  The final track, "Impossible Soul", attracts many listeners for its long duration, but in reality the track sounds like a handful of separate singles carefully sewn together.  It's a fascinating way to end the album.  The Age Of Adz is a modern electro-folk adventure.

Scissor Sisters - Night Work
The cover artwork on Night Work may have you wondering, "What were they thinking?".  After hearing the album, you'll know exactly what the Scissor Sisters were thinking.  Night Work sounds like a disco revival, but in a good way.  Every track on the record could fill the dance floor immediately.  While the lyrics are so obviously sexual that it's funny, the band manages to keep the party going.  The album ends with "Invisible Light", complete with a "Thriller-esque" voiceover by Sir Ian McKellen.  Night Work is easily one of my most loved pop albums of 2010.

The previous nine albums on this list have been in no particular order, but what fun is a "Best Of" list if I don't name the absolute best?  The next three albums on the list have managed to entertain me throughout the year and still continue to shine.  I present to you... my three favorite records of 2010.

3. Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
It's impossible to define The ArchAndroid within one genre.  The debut album from Janelle Monáe touches on classical, folk, R&B, pop, funk, and countless other genres.  As you follow the journey of the android creation, Cindi Mayweather, you learn that Monáe's style is unlike any other.  The record is separated into two suites.  Each half of the album starts with a cinematic introduction.  The radio friendly singles "Cold War" and "Tightrope" only show one side the singer's style.  The epic "BaBopBye Ya" ends the album with a bang and leaves you wanting more.  I'm eagerly awaiting the next part of Janelle Monáe's Metropolis story, but until then, The ArchAndroid is my third favorite album of 2010.

2. Robyn - Body Talk
2010 was Robyn's year.  She released three albums as the Body Talk series and became one of the leading pop artists for both indie and mainstream critics alike.  Body Talk collects the best of her three part series, all in one record.  The album is packed with, what should have been, 15 hit singles.  It's electronic, it's dance, but most of all, it's pop music.  As my favorite pop album of the year, Body Talk never gets boring.  From the spunky "Fembot" to the robotic "We Dance To The Beat", Robyn rose above the ranks of Katy Perry and Ke$ha with her fun and sophisticated Body Talk.  I predict that we'll continue to hear Robyn's distinct sound through the new year.

1. Vampire Weekend - Contra
This album was released all the way back in January.  I haven't stopped listening to it on a daily basis since then.  Vampire Weekend have a signature sound so unique that they're instantly recognizable.  Contra manages to surpass the band's outstanding self-titled 2008 debut.  Since that debut album, the band expanded their musical horizons into various new genres.  They even do the unthinkable by slathering "California English" in a puddle of auto-tune.  What starts as an airy yet bouncy record, Contra closes on a sporadic pair of tracks with "Diplomat's Son" and "I Think Ur A Contra".  Contra set the bar unbelievably high for every album this year and still holds the number one spot in my book.

What were your favorite albums of 2010? Leave a comment and let me know!

Playlist - 30 Seconds To Mars, Madina Lake & more

30 Seconds To Mars - 30 Seconds To Mars

This is the band's debut album, which is extremely different from their other albums.  I already knew a lot of their songs from the "A Beautiful Lie" album, but had never heard any of the songs from their debut.  I guess it's less, mainstream?  There's less screaming from, singer, Jared Leto.  Overall, it can get kind of repetitive, but it's still pretty good.

Madina Lake - Welcome to Oblivion

This is the only song I've heard from them, so comment if you know some other good tracks from them.  I really like this one.  The chorus is great.

Lady GaGa - Speechless

Amazing song.  It's tremendously different from her usual pop songs.  A full review of her newest album is here.  Speechless shows off her songwriting abilities and vocal talent.  It's also my current favorite song to play on the piano, really good melody.

Vampire Weekend - Contra

The entire album is amazing.  Check out my full review here.  I have a feeling I'll be listening to this album for a long time.

Here's a couple more songs that you should listen to...

The Raveonettes - Last Dance
Bat For Lashes - Seal Jubilee
Chiodos - Two Birds Stoned At Once
Billy Boy On Poison - On My Way
AFI - Medicate

As always, comments are more than welcome.  Tell me what you've been listening to...

Vampire Weekend - Contra

Creating a unique sound and image is hard to do today in today's music industry, but Vampire Weekend did just that.  In 2008, they released their self-titled debut album.  The LP was filled to the top with upbeat indie rock songs.  The bouncy staccato tinge that they added to their music became their key to success.  Contra continues that same sound, but adds new elements to many of the songs.

The album starts off immediately with "Horchata".  This song sets the tone for the entire album.  It's filled with xylophone and a steady bass beat.  This song also introduces the "new" elements I spoke of.  This time around, Vampire Weekend takes influences from the electronic genre.  Several of the songs contain synthesizers, while others have techno beats.  Surprisingly enough, this approach actually works.  It's noticeable, yet it isn't overwhelming.

On the track, "Diplomat's Son", they even go so far to include a sample from M.I.A.'s "Hussel".  This is another example of how the band has reached out farther musically, but still kept their unique style.  They have avoided the "sophomore slump" step by not taking the safe route.

Standout tracks include...

Run
Cousins
Giving Up The Gun
Holiday

I would definitely check out Contra if you loved their first album.  If your a fan of catchy upbeat music, then this is for you.  Vampire Weekend have shown where they stand in music, and they did it flawlessly.

Vampire Weekend - Cousins

Earlier this week, indie rock band, Vampire Weekend released their sophomore album, Contra.  The lead single for Contra is the fast-paced tune, "Cousins".  "Cousins" is Contra's equivalent to their hit song "A-Punk", which appeared on their debut disc.  The song relies heavily on its snare smashing drum beat.  The percussion drives the song as, singer, Ezra Koenig carries the melody.  After listening to the song, I can't seem to get the beat or the melody out of my head.  I'm left humming the single through out the entire day, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. While it still has that signature "Vampire Weekend" sounds, "Cousins" is a refreshing move for the band.  The song is both catchy and exciting.  Definitely check it out if you liked their self-titled debut album.

Look out for a full review of Contra over the weekend

January's Albums

Here's a look at some of this month's major album releases, along with a couple thoughts of my own.  Leave a comment if I missed your favorite band's album.  Also, tell me which album you're waiting for.

Jan. 05

Ke$ha - Animal
You know her song Tik Tok by now.  This album will determine if she's here to stay, or a one hit wonder of the last decade.  For some strange reason she reminds me of Katy Perry, appearing out of nowhere and all.  Personally, I'll pass, but it does include a song featuring 3OH!3 for those who are interested.

Jan. 12

OK Go - Of The Blue Color Of The Sky
I haven't heard from them since their single Here It Goes Again.  Everyone remembers the music video, right?

Vampire Weekend - Contra
This is the follow-up to their self-titled debut.  The entire album is on their Myspace for listening, but I'll wait a week to hear it.  Build up a little suspense, if you know what I mean.  I already like Horchata and Cousins, so I hope for the best.

Jan. 19

Spoon - Transference
Need some indie rock?  Transference is Spoon's seventh studio album and follow-up to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

Motion City Soundtrack - My Dinosaur Life
The pop-punk band's fourth album.  It was produced by Blink-182's Mark Hoppus.

Jan. 26

Lady Antebellum - Need You Now
This is the Country group's second album.  I'm not a big fan of the genre, so I don't have much info on this album.  However, I do know that it's highly anticipated.  Just being honest here.  I really need to listen to more country music.

Never Shout Never - What Is Love?
The internet sensation's debut album is here.  Never Shout Never (formerly NeverShoutNever!) is a one man band who plays primarily the ukulele.  He recently won an mtvU Woodie Award.

Upcoming Releases

I have a few highly anticipated albums coming out later this year. Some of them have no set release date, so I can't be sure how much later this year they will be released.

Paramore - Brand New Eyes

This one might be the album I'm most excited about. I still listen to Riot! on a regular basis, and the single is a good sign. Brand New Eyes comes out Sept. 29.

Vampire Weekend - TBA

This album has no determined release date or title, but it's coming this year. I'm listening to their debut album as I write this, and I hope their next release will have a similar sound.

Flyleaf - Memento Mori

Here's another album without a definite release date. It seems to be flopping back and forth between Sept., Oct., and Nov. Anyways, a single is scheduled for this month.

Muse - The Resistance

I reviewed their single, Uprising, in another post. Read the review if you want to know about this album. The single kind of has me on the edge. I'm not sure if I like the synth focused style. The three part symphony at the end of The Resistance should be amazing. The Resistance is released on Sept. 15.

I'm sure there will be more albums announced later that I'll pick up, but these are on my "buy it on release day" list.
